Level 2 charger and panel upgrade cost

The charger is the cheap part. The circuit, the run, and whether the panel can take 40–60 amps are the bid.

A Level 2 charger is a 240-volt appliance. The box on the wall is rarely the expensive line. The electrician’s path from the panel to the parking spot is.

What “typical” actually means

EnergySage, citing Qmerit install data, puts a typical home EV charger install at $800 to $3,000, depending on the electrical setup. Panel work is extra when you need it.

On the same page: adding a circuit when you have slots and capacity is the cheap path (on the order of $60–$150 in their breakdown for that slice). A subpanel is listed around $500–$1,500. A main-service / panel upgrade is $1,500–$4,000+.

Treat those as bands, not a bid. Long conduit through finished space, a detached garage, and utility service work move you to the top.

Do you need a panel upgrade?

Not automatically. A Level 2 circuit often wants a 40–60 amp breaker. Homes on 200-amp service with open slots frequently take it. Many pre-2000s 100-amp panels do not, once HVAC and a water heater are already on the bus.

The only adult answer is a load calculation by a licensed electrician. “Your panel looks full” is not that calculation.

Before you pay for a 200-amp service, price:

  • A lower-amp charger setting (slower overnight fill, smaller breaker)
  • Load management / sharing on an existing 240-volt circuit
  • A subpanel in the garage if the main is physically full but electrically fine

Those are still electrical work. They are often cheaper than a service upgrade.

Hardwire vs NEMA 14-50

Plug-in 14-50 is convenient if you already have the outlet. New 14-50s often need a GFCI breaker under current NEC language, which is not free. Hardwiring a wall unit is frequently cleaner for a dedicated charger. Neither is “the right one” without the run length and the code your inspector actually uses.

What a serious quote includes

  1. Load calculation, not a glance at empty slots.
  2. Charger amperage, breaker size, wire size, and whether it is hardwired.
  3. Path: feet of conduit, finished walls, trench, indoor vs outdoor disconnect.
  4. Panel: included, excluded, or “if needed” with a not-to-exceed.
  5. Permit and inspection.
  6. Who owns utility coordination if the meter or service drop changes.

Federal credit

Do not assume a federal EV-charger credit is still on the table for a job you have not started. Confirm placed-in-service dates on IRS 30C (or whatever replaced it in your year) before you subtract $1,000 from a bid. Utility rebates are local.

A realistic stack of invoices

Best case. 200A panel in the garage wall, open slots, 20 feet of conduit. EnergySage/Qmerit’s overall $800–$3,000 band is where this lives, often the lower half. Hardware is a few hundred; labor is the rest.

Normal case. Panel in the basement, charger in the garage, finished ceiling, 40–80 feet. You are in the middle of that band or above it. Hardwire vs 14-50 is a code-and-GFCI conversation, not a lifestyle brand.

The expensive case. 100A service, full panel, detached garage. Subpanel $500–$1,500 or main upgrade $1,500–$4,000+ on EnergySage’s own ladder, plus the charger run. This is where people get angry at the charger company. The charger company did not fill the panel in 1978.

Load management (a few hundred to about $600 in various 2026 installer writeups) is the fork that avoids the service upgrade. It is still an electrician. It is not a magic plug.

Questions for the first site visit

  1. What is the service amperage, and did you look at the meter socket or just the panel sticker?
  2. Will you do a load calc, and can I have the sheet?
  3. Hardwire or 14-50, and which breaker (GFCI or not) does this jurisdiction want?
  4. Path of the conduit, in English, including the part through the finished room.
  5. If the calc fails, what is Plan B priced at today, not after demolition?
