Home battery vs standby generator

A generator is unlimited runtime if fuel flows. A battery is quiet, instant, and finite. Pick based on outage length and what you refuse to lose — not the brochure.

Backup is an insurance product. The right machine is the one that covers the outage you actually get and the loads you refuse to lose.

We have not installed a Generac or a Powerwall. The ranges below are what installers and marketplaces were publishing in 2026. Your pad, gas meter, and panel will disagree.

Two different jobs

Standby generator (automatic transfer switch, usually natural gas or propane). Runtime is “until fuel stops.” Lights blink for several seconds on transfer. It is loud. It wants a pad, clearances from openings, a gas run, and annual service. A typical natural-gas standby job is often quoted around $10,000–$13,000 installed; messy sites, big liquid-cooled units, and long fuel runs show up in the $16,000–$25,000+ bucket. Generac’s own 22 kW bundle with a transfer switch has been listed around $7,369 before labor, plumbing, pad, and permits.

Home battery (gateway + one or more wall units). Instant, silent, no exhaust. Runtime is a pile of kilowatt-hours. One Tesla Powerwall-class unit is about 13.5 kWh; installer blogs in 2026 commonly put a single unit in the ~$11,500–$15,500 installed neighborhood depending on market. Whole-home or multi-day designs stack units. Federal residential storage credit (25D) followed the same “done by end of 2025” cliff as other IRA home credits in IRS materials — do not assume a 2026 ITC on the quote.

The only question that matters

How long is your outage, and is the fuel still there?

  • Hours, not days (tree on a line, utility switching): a battery on a critical-load subpanel is usually enough and nicer to live with.
  • Days, and you have natural gas that stayed up last time: standby generator wins on runtime. Ice storms that take gas with them are a different story.
  • You already have solar: a battery earns its keep on ordinary afternoons (self-consumption / time-of-use). A generator earns nothing on a sunny Tuesday.
  • Well pump, medical device, or sump that cannot miss: size the watts and the surge, then pick the machine. A 13.5 kWh pack is not a well-pump plan if the pump is 2 kW and the outage is 20 hours unless everything else is off.

Cost ranges to take to a bid meeting (not to tattoo on the fridge)

Installer and marketplace writeups in 2026 cluster like this:

  • Portable generator: hundreds to low thousands, plus a code-legal inlet and interlock or transfer switch. Cheap hardware plus illegal backfeed is how people kill linemen.
  • Standby, typical gas: roughly $8,000–$20,000 installed in several regional guides; $10,000–$13,000 is a common “nothing weird” Generac-class number.
  • Battery, one unit: roughly $10,000–$16,000 installed; more units if you want whole-home or long runtime.
  • Panel / service work sitting under either option: often thousands, sometimes as much as the backup gear.

Those bands overlap on purpose. A small essentials generator can undercut a stacked battery. A single battery can undercut a liquid-cooled whole-home genset.

Maintenance and “free” kilowatt-hours

Generators want oil, filters, and exercise. Homeowner-cost articles often put annual service in the low hundreds. Batteries want firmware and a clean environment; they do not drink propane on a Saturday test.

If you have solar or nasty time-of-use peaks, the battery has a non-outage job. Price that separately. If you do not, you are paying battery prices for generator work, and you should be honest about it.

What a serious quote includes

  1. A load list with running watts and starting watts (well, HVAC, fridge, medical, internet, lights). “Whole home” without amperage is marketing.
  2. For generators: fuel type, transfer switch amperage, pad, clearances, exhaust, HOA, permits, who does the gas utility tap.
  3. For batteries: usable kWh, continuous kW, surge, round-trip efficiency, operating temperature, whether backup is whole-panel or a subpanel.
  4. What happens when the unit cannot cover HVAC — load shed, or you freeze.
  5. Warranty: years, cycles, labor.

Hybrid is a real product, not indecision

Battery for the blink-free hours and the daily cycling; generator for day three. It is two invoices. It is also how people who lived through a week-long outage actually sleep.

What EnergySage’s battery marketplace says in 2026

Their storage cost page puts a typical install around $15,647 before incentives for about 13.5 kWh — the same usable size they associate with a Powerwall 3-class pack, enough to keep essentials up, not the whole electric furnace. Brand-level $/kWh on that page (first half of 2026 quotes) runs from Tesla around $967/kWh (about $13,055 at 13.5 kWh) through Enphase around $1,429/kWh, FranklinWH around $1,232/kWh, with a long tail of other brands. Those are marketplace averages, not your wall.

Read usable kWh, not the sticker. Round-trip efficiency eats a slice. Cold garages eat another. Stacking a second battery is how “essentials for a night” becomes “two days of fridge and well,” and how the invoice doubles.

Federal residential storage credit followed the same end-of-2025 cliff as other IRA home credits in IRS materials. Do not let a 2026 bid subtract an ITC that is not there. State programs (SGIP-style, NYSERDA-style) are local and often waitlisted.

Make the generator smaller with the panel

The critical-load article is live. If you only back up eight circuits, you can stop shopping 22 kW air-cooled whole-home units. A lot of “I need whole home” is “I did not want to label breakers.” Label them.

Maintenance you will skip until it fails

Generators want oil, a load test, and an exercise cycle. Skip that and the first outage is a repair visit. Batteries want a place that is not a sauna or a freezer, firmware that still talks to the gateway, and a plan for when capacity has faded in year 10. Neither is “set and forget.” One of them is louder when you forget.
