Battery plus solar vs a generator for multi-day outages

A 12-hour outage is a fridge and a few lights. A three-day outage is a different machine. A home battery is a tank of kilowatt-hours. Solar on the roof is how that tank refills while the grid is still down, if the sun is actually out. A standby generator is how you keep making electricity when the tank is empty and the sky is ice. The sales pitch will pick one and call the other obsolete. Your last outage, your winter, and the circuits you refuse to lose are what pick it.

What do these jobs cost in 2026?

EnergySage’s 2026 storage pages put a typical home battery around $15,647 installed for about 13.5 kWh, the size they associate with a Powerwall 3. HomeGuide puts a typical whole-house standby generator at $6,000 to $11,000 installed, or $9,500 to $24,000 when the run is long or the unit is over 20 kW. That is the pad, the gas, and the transfer switch, not a roof.

The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (25D) was 30% of qualifying solar and battery costs through December 31, 2025. IRS FAQs on the 2025 tax law say 25D is not allowed for expenditures after that date. A 2026 bid that still knocks 30% off is using last year’s form.

State and utility battery or solar programs may still exist. Ask whether they pay on installed, interconnected, or “we ordered the gear in 2025.”

EnergySage’s 20-year cost table on the batteries-versus-generators page is their math, with their assumptions (solar covering 100% of electricity, a $225 monthly bill, 3.17% inflation, 120 generator hours a year). It is not a promise on your rate. Read it as “they are counting everyday kWh, not only storm nights.” A generator does not shrink the utility bill on a normal Tuesday. Solar might. Backup value is separate from bill value, and you should not let a salesperson mash them into one “savings” line.

What actually lasts three days?

EIA’s household electricity explainer is the national picture; EnergySage cites about 29 kWh per day for an average U.S. home. A single 13.5 kWh pack is not that day. It is a critical-load day: fridge, internet, some lights, maybe the air handler if you shed the rest.

On a clear day, an array that still works in a grid-down “island” can refill the pack. That is the whole trick of solar-plus-battery in a multi-day outage. The trick fails when the panels are under snow, under ice, or under three days of storm cloud, or when the inverter is not set up to form a grid without the utility. “We have solar” is not the same as “this inverter islands and the battery can charge from the roof while the street is dead.” Get that sentence in the bid.

A standby on natural gas runs as long as the pipe has gas. A propane unit runs as long as the tank has propane and a truck can reach you. Ice storms that kill the grid sometimes kill the roads too. Piped gas is the boring superpower, until the gas utility has its own outage.

Motors still win arguments. A well pump starting watts will eat a small battery inverter even if the kWh look fine on paper. Size surge first, then hours.

What should three bids mean?

Bid A, battery on essentials, no new roof. One 13.5 kWh-class pack, gateway, critical-load panel. EnergySage’s $15,647 neighborhood. Covers the short outage and the first night of a long one. After that you are waiting on the utility unless you add solar that can island, or a generator that can charge the pack.

Bid B, solar plus that same pack. EnergySage’s combined ~$46,000 to $47,000 before incentives, using their 12 kW plus 13.5 kWh pair. Everyday kWh plus a recharge path in the sun. Demand islanding, a load list, and what happens at 2 a.m. on night three if day two was clouds. If the array is already on the roof, adding the battery later is extra labor; EnergySage flags that pairing at first install is cleaner.

Bid C, standby generator on the circuits you named. HomeGuide’s $6,000 to $11,000 typical installed band, sized from the standby sizing list, not from square footage. Fuel in writing. Exhaust and carbon monoxide in writing, because Ready.gov wants generators outdoors and at least 20 feet from openings.

A fourth setup exists and salespeople hate it because it is two invoices: Bid A or B for the quiet hours, plus a small generator that can charge the battery when the sun does not. That is often cheaper than a 22 kW “whole home” and more honest than a single 13.5 kWh pack sold as a week of ice.

Work the hours. Fridge plus internet plus lights might be 5 kWh in a careful day, which one 13.5 kWh pack can cover with margin if you are not running heat. Night two without sun is when that margin dies. If January outages at your house come with snow on the roof, Bid B is a summer story unless the bid also names a generator or enough unused kWh to sleep through the storm. If your outages are afternoon PSPS-style cuts on clear days, Bid B is doing the job it was designed for. Match the weather you actually get, not the weather in the brochure.

What has to be on the quote?

  1. Usable kWh, not only the sticker, and continuous kW so you know what can start at once.
  2. The critical-load list, with fridge, medical devices, well, and heat named or explicitly left off.
  3. Whether the solar can charge the battery when the grid is down, in a sentence you can point at later.
  4. Island / backup gateway, transfer method, and whether you have to be home.
  5. Fuel for any generator: natural gas meter capacity, propane gallons, or “gasoline you will not store.”
  6. Placement, exhaust, and CO detectors.
  7. Incentives dated 2026, with 25D left off unless they can show a legal exception you have in writing from a tax person, not from a brochure.

If a medical device is why you are shopping, put it on the house-side outage plan before you pick a brand of pack.

How does this go wrong?

The battery is sold as unlimited because “you have solar,” and the inverter cannot island.

How do I decide this week?

  1. Write down the longest outage you actually had in the last five years, in hours, and whether the sun was up for much of it.
  2. List the circuits you will not lose on night two, using the critical-load page, and add the watts.
  3. Price a 13.5 kWh-class battery against a standby generator against the same list, with EnergySage’s $15,647 and HomeGuide’s $6,000 to $11,000 as the sanity bands.
  4. If you want the battery to last past one night, ask in writing whether the solar charges it in island mode, and what a cloudy day does to that story.
  5. Cross out 25D on any 2026 bid, then ask which state or utility money is still real.
  6. If a well, a heat pump, or a medical device is on the list, size surge and hours before you pick a brand, and do not let “whole home” stand in for that list.
