Automatic vs manual transfer switch: what the quote is actually selling

How a transfer switch keeps the generator off the utility lines, what automatic vs manual actually does in an outage, and what those jobs cost to install.

A transfer switch is the box that decides whether your house is on the utility or on the generator. Only one of those should be connected at a time. If both are, you can push power back onto the street and shock a lineman who thinks the line is dead. That is the whole point of this hardware. The generator is the engine. The switch is what makes using it legal and not lethal.

You are shopping for one of three things, and quotes mix the names on purpose:

  • Manual transfer switch: you start the generator, then you flip a switch (or a set of breakers) so selected circuits run on that generator.
  • Automatic transfer switch (ATS): the box watches the utility, starts a compatible standby generator, waits for it to stabilize, then moves the house (or a subpanel) over by itself.
  • Interlock kit: a sliding plate on the breaker panel that makes it physically impossible to turn the generator breaker on while the main breaker is on. Cheap. Still manual. Still needs a legal inlet, not a cord in a dryer outlet.

If the bid just says “transfer switch, $2,000” with no automatic/manual and no amp rating, you do not know what you bought. People have paid for an ATS and gotten something that still needs a person in the basement.

What does this cost to install?

  • Manual: $400 to $1,300 installed ($200 to $800 for the switch itself)

Those are other people’s panels. A 200-amp service-entrance ATS, a packed panel that needs a subpanel first, or a long run from a standby generator pad will sit above the average. A six-circuit manual switch next to a portable inlet is the bottom.

The generator is a separate pile of money. Do not compare an ATS bundled into a standby quote against a $500 interlock on a portable you already own. Different jobs.

What actually happens when the power dies?

Manual, portable generator. You get the generator outside (never in the garage, never in the basement), start it, plug the cord into a inlet box on the wall, then go to the panel. With a manual transfer switch, you move the circuits you want onto generator power, or you throw one transfer handle. With an interlock, you turn the main breaker off, slide the plate, turn the generator breaker on. If you skip the main-off step and you do not have an interlock or a true transfer switch, you are the backfeed problem.

You have to be home. You have to do this in the dark. You have to remember the order. That is fine for storms you see coming and for a fridge-plus-furnace kit. It is a bad plan if you travel, if someone in the house needs power without a scavenger hunt, or if the generator is in a drift of snow.

Automatic, standby generator. Utility voltage drops. The ATS waits a few seconds so a blink does not start a 20 kW engine. It signals the generator. The generator warms up. The ATS transfers. When the utility is back and stays back, it transfers the other way and lets the engine cool down. You can be asleep. The house (or the circuits on that switch) comes back in a minute, not after you find gloves.

An ATS does not make a portable generator automatic. The generator has to be a standby unit the switch can start: start wires, a battery, and usually a matching brand. “ATS-ready” on a portable brochure is not the same as a Generac or Kohler that the ATS is listed with.

Do I need whole-house coverage or a handful of circuits?

This choice changes the switch, the generator size, and the bill.

Essential-only means a small subpanel or a 6- to 10-circuit manual switch: fridge, a few lights, the furnace or boiler control, maybe a well or a sump, maybe internet. The rest of the house stays dark. You can run that on a portable if the watts fit. The critical load panel article is the list for that.

Whole-house means a 200-amp (or your service size) ATS that sits at the service and can feed everything, often with load-shed so the generator is not asked to run the range, dryer, and HVAC at once. That is a standby generator job. The switch is a few thousand dollars in a $10,000-plus generator project, not a standalone weekend.

A 100-amp ATS on a 200-amp service is a middle path: it feeds a subpanel of chosen circuits automatically. Read the amp number on the quote. “Transfer switch” without 50 A, 100 A, or 200 A is incomplete.

Interlock vs a real transfer switch

An interlock is a mechanical slider. Inspectors in many places accept it with a listed kit, a generator breaker, an outdoor inlet, and a permit. It is not an ATS. It does not start anything. It does not keep you from overloading the generator; you still choose which breakers to turn on.

It is a reasonable cheap path for a portable you will operate yourself. It is the wrong thing to pay $2,000 for if you thought you were getting automatic whole-house coverage.

Never substitute a dryer outlet and a homemade cord. That setup has a name on job sites and it kills people. Inlet plus interlock or inlet plus transfer switch. Full stop.

What should be on the quote?

  1. Type: automatic, manual, or interlock, written out. Not “transfer kit.”
  2. Amps of the switch, and whether it is service-entrance rated (it can sit ahead of the main) or it sits after the main.
  3. What it feeds: whole panel, or a list of circuits, or a new subpanel. Circuit labels, not “essentials.”
  4. Inlet: amp rating (30 A vs 50 A is a different cord and a different generator), location, and who supplies the cord.
  5. Compatibility: brand and model of generator the ATS will start, or a clear statement that this is manual/portable only.
  6. Permit and inspection. Panel work without a permit is how you fight the insurer after a fire.
  7. Labor assumptions: working space, a full panel, aluminum vs copper, whether they have to add a subpanel first.
  8. What is excluded: the generator, a pad, gas piping, a battery heater, load-shed modules.

If two bids are $1,000 apart, one of them is usually a 6-circuit manual and the other is a 200-amp ATS. Align the type before you haggle the labor.

What do three real-looking bids mean?

These are stacked from the HomeGuide and Angi ranges, not a quote for your panel.

Bid A, $650. Interlock kit, 50-amp inlet on the outside wall, permit. You already own a portable. You will kill the main, slide the plate, and pick breakers. This is a complete job for that plan. It is not automatic, and it will not start anything when you are at work.

Bid B, $1,400. Ten-circuit manual transfer switch, inlet, labeled circuits (fridge, furnace, well, living room lights, two bedrooms). Angi’s typical professional band. You still start the generator by hand. You flip one device instead of doing breaker yoga. If the list of circuits is missing, this bid is unfinished.

Bid C, $2,400 for the switch line, inside a $12,000 standby package. 200-amp ATS, start wires, load-shed for the range and dryer. HomeGuide’s automatic top end. If Bid C is only $2,400 with no generator, no pad, and no gas pipe, you are looking at hardware without a source of power.

A $2,000 allowance on a new-construction sheet that says only “transfer switch” could be any of the three. Ask for the model number and whether it starts a generator. If the builder cannot point at the enclosure, treat it as Bid A until they prove otherwise.

What goes wrong after you sign?

The inlet is 30-amp and the generator is 50-amp, so you own an adapter story. The ATS is a different brand than the generator and will not close the start circuit. The interlock is a homemade bar, not a listed kit, and the inspector fails it. Load-shed was never programmed, so the standby trips when the heat pump and the well start together. The manual switch was installed, but nobody moved the furnace onto it, so you have lights and a warm fridge and a cold house.

Backfeed is the failure that hurts other people. If the bid includes a dryer-outlet connection, stop. Inlet, interlock or transfer switch, permit.

How do I pick in one afternoon?

Start from how you live through an outage, then buy the switch that matches.

You are home for storms, you have a portable, and you can flip breakers: interlock or a small manual switch. Budget the HomeGuide manual band, $400 to $1,300 installed, plus a legal inlet.

You want the fridge and the furnace to come back while you are out, and you are buying a standby generator: ATS, usually bundled. Budget the automatic band, $600 to $2,500 for the switch portion, and treat it as part of the generator quote, not a $200 add-on.

You were sold “automatic” on a custom-home allowance: look at the panel. If there is no ATS enclosure, no start-wire bundle to a future pad, and no model number, you have a line item, not a system. Get the electrician to write the missing hardware before you pay the rest.
