The tools you need to DIY grab bars

A weekend kit for grab bars that actually hold: which bar to buy, a stud finder that works on tile, a level, and when to stop and open the wall instead of trusting a hollow-wall anchor.

You’re putting grab bars in because someone needs a solid thing to hold at the toilet or the shower, and you’d rather do it this weekend than wait on a bathroom remodel. The placement guide is where the bar goes and what the wall has to take. This page is the kit: the bar itself, the finder, the level, and the cheap lever swap on the bathroom door so the same person can get into the room.

Cost to Renovate’s 2026 table still puts a pro-installed bar around $100 to $350 each, and a lever around $100 to $250 a door. The gap between those numbers and a Saturday of your own labor is real, but only if the screws land in wood or in a backing system the manufacturer actually rates for a fall. A $30 bar in drywall is more expensive than a $300 bar that holds.

What am I actually buying?

A grab bar is a load-rated rail, usually stainless, 1¼ to 1½ inches in diameter, with flanges that hide or show the screws. Public accessibility rules (homes do not have to follow them) still use 250 pounds in any direction and a height of 33 to 36 inches off the finished floor. Moen’s common Home Care 24-inch bar, model 8724, is 1.25 inches in diameter, concealed-screw, and Moen rates it at 500 pounds when you install it the way they specify: into a stud, or with their SecureMount anchors.

Buy the 24-inch for the shower control wall and for a short run. The toilet side usually wants a longer rail (the Access Board’s typical side bar is 42 inches) so someone can scoot along it as they stand. Same product family, longer length. Match the finish to the faucet if you care; the diameter and the rating matter more than the color.

Do not buy a suction cup, a towel bar, or a “decorative” rail that never publishes a load number. Those fail when the person is already falling.

Which stud finder, and why tile fools the cheap ones

The bar only works if both ends hit structure. In a typical wall, studs are 16 inches apart, center to center. A 24-inch bar can land on one stud and miss the other. A 42-inch bar should span two, unless the plumber already ate the bay with a vent stack.

Tile, cement board, and metal corner bead make a $15 one-sensor finder lie. You want something that shows the full width of the stud, not a single beep you hope is the center.

Franklin’s own page lists the ProSensor 710 at $52.95: 13 sensors, 1.6-inch detection depth, no calibration dance. That is a lot for a tool you might use twice a year, and it is still cheaper than opening a tiled wall because you drilled the grout line and missed.

If there is a closet on the other side of the bath, find the studs from that empty wall and measure through. Mark both faces with painter’s tape. Then still drill a tiny pilot in the grout or in a spot the flange will cover, because plumbing walls are messy and the first stud is not always 16 inches from the corner.

If you cannot find two solid hits in the 33 to 36 inch band, stop. Move the bar a few inches, or open a patch and drop blocking in. Do not “make it work” with a generic drywall toggle. The placement guide is blunt about that because the failure mode is the bar coming out mid-fall.

Do I need a fancy level?

You need the bar horizontal (or truly vertical, for the one at the shower opening). A 9-inch torpedo level is enough. Hold it on the bar, not on the tile, because grout lines lie.

Amazon had the 935R around $20 when we looked: magnetic edge, vials at 0, 45, and 90. You do not need a four-foot box level for a 24-inch rail. You do need to see the bubble while you are holding the bar against the wall with one hand.

What about the bathroom door?

A round knob is a different problem than a narrow door. If someone can get through the opening but cannot twist the knob, a lever is the cheap win. Cost to Renovate’s 2026 table puts levers at $100 to $250 installed. The part is a screwdriver job if the door is already bored for a standard lockset.

That listing is a passage lever: no lock, fine for a hall bath that does not need privacy, or a bedroom that already has a separate lock. A bathroom that should latch needs the privacy function in the same Accent line (turn-button inside, emergency slot outside). Same look, different function. Do not buy dummy levers that do not latch.

If the door itself is too narrow, the lever does not fix it. Measure clear width before you order hardware.

What should already be in the drawer?

You probably own these. If you do not, a neighbor does, and they are a poor Amazon hunt compared with the bar and the finder.

  • A drill and a bit that matches the lag or structural screw the bar came with. Moen packs hardware. Use theirs, or a structural screw into wood, not a drywall screw from the junk drawer.
  • Painter’s tape, for marking height and stud edges on tile without leaving a Sharpie tattoo.
  • A tape measure, because 33 to 36 inches is from the finished floor to the top of the bar, not to the screw holes.
  • Safety glasses. Tile chips.

Skip the $150 new drill unless yours is dead. This job is a handful of holes.

What Amazon will not ship you

Blocking. If the shower is already open, a 2×8 or 2×10 between the studs, face in that 33 to 36 inch band, is the correct backing. That lumber comes from a yard, not a grab-bar listing. Take a photo before the drywall goes up.

A rated retrofit system, if the tile is on and you miss the studs. Moen sells SecureMount separately for their Home Care bars. Whatever you buy, the rating has to be pull-out in any direction, not “holds 300 pounds” in tiny print that means shear on a closet shelf. If the box will not say that, leave it.

Caulk as structure. Caulk is for water. It does not make a hollow flange into a stud.

A Saturday that actually finishes

  1. Read the placement guide and tape the heights: toilet side, toilet rear if you have wall, shower control wall, vertical at the opening.
  2. Find studs on every run. Mark edges, not just a guessed center.
  3. If both flanges hit wood in the right band, hang the bar. Level it, drill pilots, drive the supplied screws, cover the flanges.
  4. If a flange misses, move the bar a little or stop. Do not invent a third attachment.
  5. Swap the bathroom knob for a lever if that is on the list.
  6. Have the person who will use it mime sit, stand, and the shower step before you commit the holes, then still put the screws into wood.

When should I put the drill down?

Stop if you cannot find studs, if the wall is a glass-tile mosaic you do not want to drill, if there is a mixing valve or a supply line where the flange wants to sit, or if the person who will use the bar needs a folding rail or a different height than 33 to 36 inches. That last one is a conversation with whoever helps them move, not a product page.

A carpenter or a CAPS remodeler is the right call when the wall has to open. The kit on this page is for the case where the structure is already there and you can prove it with the finder.
